Today’s sportscasters developing tomorrow’s talent
The Sportscasters Mentoring Group (SMG) is a mentor-apprentice structured sports broadcasting company with a simple (but not easy) mission:
“To prepare and equip aspiring sports broadcasters for success”
This preparation and equipping for sports broadcasting success is a two-step process.
- Develop essential broadcasting skills within each student that’s required of working sports broadcasters, and
- Ensure that each student is able to develop a network of influential industry contacts.

SMG Founder, Michael Madden
Located in Calabasas, CA, SMG was founded by former business, medical, and sports talk show host Michael Madden. To date, the Sportscasters Mentoring Group is the only all sports broadcasting school in the U.S.
While many broadcasting schools treat sports broadcasting as a mere chapter in the book, at SMG, sports broadcasting is THE book.
Once established, SMG was quickly able to provide the “missing link to success” that traditional brick and mortar broadcasting schools aren’t structured to provide:
Insider access and training from professional sports broadcasters, along with regular involvement inside the real sports broadcasting industry.
Because of this unique training model, SMG is able to offer one-on-one sports broadcasting training worldwide to anyone within acceptable driving distance of a radio station or working sportscaster. If your passion is to become a show host, play-by-play announcer, sideline reporter, or update anchor, SMG has a training program for you.
SMG students range from high school to retirement age, and everything in-between. Many of those same students have referred to their SMG training as an “advanced graduate school level” sports broadcasting school that served as their bridge into the real world of sports broadcasting.
That bridge also lead many to real contacts, real job opportunities, and real advantages by starting their broadcasting career on the inside.
SMG is structured is very differently from traditional broadcasting schools.
SMG’s sports broadcasting school is unorthodox, yet so very effective, because it’s…
- Practical. You’re training at a real radio station in your own community.
- Sensible. Your instructors are professional sportscasters. Who better to train you?
- Flexible. Convenient training days and times that you set. You’re a class of one.
- Successful. You’re already positioned inside the station – with contacts – when jobs become available
You’ll discover SMG’s mentor-apprentice model provides hands-on learning while also promoting relationship building, regardless of which Sportscaster Training Program you choose. You’ll also discover that experienced sportscasters are best suited to train and guide you into this highly competitive business by serving as your personal mentor-instructor.
Regardless of your age, budget, or educational background, if you truly want to begin a career in sports broadcasting, you now have that opportunity.
SMG Works for You, the Client
A lot of companies talk a good game and say all the things you want to hear. At SMG, you are the reason our business even exists … and we don’t forget that.
Just as your training will be one-on-one and customized, that same personalized attention will be devoted to every issue that may arise along the way.
To SMG, you’re a broadcasting student today, but a client and friend for life.
